Appalachian State announced former Texas A&M offensive analyst Lawrence Dawsey as its next wide receivers coach Thursday. He spent the past two seasons with the Aggies in College Station.

“We are excited to welcome Lawrence to our program and the App Family,” Appalachian State coach Shawn Clark said. “His experience coaching receivers at a high level and serving as a mentor of young men will be a great asset to our program.”

A former Florida State receiver from 1987-90, Dawsey compiled more than 2,00 yards receiving and 20 touchdowns with the Seminoles. He went on to play eight seasons in the NFL, winning the Rookie of the Year award in 1991.

Upon completing his pro career, Dawsey decided to get into coaching. He spent three seasons as the receivers coach at South Florida before returning to his alma mater in 2007. He was the receivers coach and passing game coordinator in 2013 when Florida State won the national championship.

After Seminoles coach Jimbo Fisher left to take the job at Texas A&M, Dawsey was not retained. He spent the following two seasons in the Bill Walsh Diversity Coaching Fellowship before rejoining Fisher in College Station.

“I am excited to have the opportunity to be back on the field coaching wide receivers at Appalachian State University,” Dawsey said. “I am looking forward to being a member of a great coaching staff and working with a talented group of student-athletes. My goal is to aid in the development of these young men to help them reach their full potential both on and off the field.”

Dawsey also spent one season under Nick Saban as a graduate assistant at LSU in 2003. The Mountaineers touted his experience learning under several successful coaches as a big factor in their decision to hire him.

Appalachian State is coming off of a successful 10-4 finish, including an appearance in the Sun Belt Conference Championship. They earned a trip to the Boca Raton Bowl, where they lost in a shootout to Western Kentucky.

The Mountaineers open the 2022 season on Sept. 3 against North Carolina.
