Buzz Williams believes Vanderbilt has 'the most dense playbook in Division I history'
Texas A&M will look to extend their three-game winning streak to four games on Tuesday as they’ll hit the road to take on Vanderbilt, who currently sits at the bottom on the SEC standings with just one win in conference play this season.
But Tuesday night’s matchup won’t be as easy as it may seem on paper for the Aggies, as Texas A&M head coach Buzz Williams gave some high praise to the Commodores specifically regarding their offensive scheme.
“They have the most dense playbook in Division I history,” Williams said. “I used to say that about Coach [Jim] Christian when he was the head coach at Boston College.”
Vanderbilt head coach Jerry Stackhouse is in the midst of his fifth season as the Commodores’ head coach. And while his team may be underachieving this season, they’ve still been able to give opponents problems thanks to their intricate offense according to Williams.
“Coach Stackhouse, his offensive skill, how he utilizes all 12 players [and they all] will play. He will mix and match the groups. You can tell he watches an enormous amount of film because he attacks what he believes your weak spot is and or defensive philosophy,” Williams explained.

“I enjoy watching them, I don’t enjoy playing against them.”
Stackhouse had a 19-year career in the NBA as a player following his impressive two year college career at North Carolina. Clearly translating his wealth of his basketball knowledge into coaching after taking home the SEC Coach of the Year Award and the Ben Jobe Award last season.
His acumen has not translated in results for Vanderbilt this season, with the Commodores ranking last in points per game and field goal percentage in the SEC this season. But there’s no question that the opposing head coaches will have to play some chess against one another schematically throughout the contest.
“Because their playbook is so dense that it’s impossible to know all of it, but you’re trying to figure out how they’re going to attack it,” Williams said. “And in the times that we’ve played them I’ve studied so much of their stuff, but it may not necessarily apply to us because our defense is different. But they run really really good action.”
The Aggies are currently 8.5-point road favorites over Vanderbilt for Tuesday night’s game, which will tip off at 7:00 p.m. ET and air on ESPNU, ESPN+, and can be streamed on FuboTV.
