Texas A&M insider reveals what the Aggies QB change could mean for Haynes King
Major changes have come to Texas A&M after their upset loss to Appalachian State last weekend. The No. 1 question was the quarterback spot moving forward. It now seems Jimbo Fisher is leaning into starting Max Johnson over Haynes King against Miami. With that appearing to be the case, some are wondering what that will mean for King in College Station moving forward.
Billy Liucci of TexAgs.com joined ‘McElroy & Cubelic In The Morning’ and talked about what this decision could mean for the former Top-10 QB. He believes this entire situation now depends on what Johnson does during his start against the Hurricanes and moving forward.

“I think it’s dependent on the performance of Max. I think Haynes is how Jimbo prefers it,” said Liucci. “We have entered an area where it’s kind of a ‘whatever it takes to win’ zone. If you’re getting bad quarterback play, you’ve kind of opened Pandora’s Box enough where you can play both. I don’t think that’s Jimbo’s intention or desire at all.”
King opened the season with 364 yards for three touchdowns and two picks against Sam Houston State. While that was too much from the Aggie QB, he followed that up with not enough. King threw for just 97 yards with no touchdowns or picks during the loss to the Mountaineers. With King sorting through these struggles, having Johnson on the sidelines was starting to create some buzz that the job should be his.

It now appears as if it’ll be Johnson’s job moving forward. Just like how King lost it following his poor play, Liucci believes that’s the only way Johnson would lose the job from here.
“It’s Max’s job just like it was Haynes’ job and he’ll only lose it through performance,” said Liucci.
Texas A&M’s QB competition was an interesting one overall. King was the player with the higher ceiling based on his dual-threat ability. However, his lack of experience was fully apparent in his time as the starter. Meanwhile, Johnson always had the higher floor based on what he did at LSU last year. Having him under center tomorrow will hopefully kick start an Aggie offense that has struggled to get going to start the season.
