The Texas A&M baseball team is heating up at the perfect time. The Aggies entered the SEC Tournament this past week as the No. 10 seed after going 14-16 in conference play, but refused to let that deter them.

They reeled off wins in four of its first five games of the tournament, knocking out both No. 3 seed LSU and No. 2 Arkansas en route to the championship. Although Texas A&M eventually fell to Vanderbilt in that game, they sent a message to the rest of the country heading into Regional play of the 2023 NCAA Baseball Tournament.

“I mean, there are a lot of comparisons for us getting hot,” senior outfielder Jordan Thompson said. “It feels great. I really trust these guys. I love them to death. They’re my brothers and my family, and I have nothing but faith in them to keep pounding the zone pitcher-wise or the hitters hitting good at-bats and stuff like that. Just full trust.”

The Aggies SEC Tournament run included some impressive performances against schools that went on to be named Regional hosts in the NCAA Tournament. That included a 5-0 shutout of South Carolina in which the Gamecocks recorded just one hit. In a 5-4 win against Arkansas in the semifinals to reach the championship game, A&M held the Razorbacks to one run over the first eight innings before fending off a late run to hold on for the win.

The recent string of postseason success is a story we also saw play out for the Aggies last season. However, this year it came as a bit more of a surprise.

In coach Jim Schlossnagle’s first year, A&M earned the No. 2 seed in the SEC Tournament. The Aggies lived up to the part by rolling through the first two games of the SEC Tournament before losing to Florida in the semifinals. They then rolled through Regional and Super Regional play at the NCAA Tournament to earn a trip to the College World Series.

Aggies fans will hope a similar string of events plays out this season as they look to stay hot heading into the NCAA Tournament this weekend.

Texas A&M’s play in the SEC Tournament earned it the No. 2 seed in the Stanford Regional. There the Aggies join Stanford, San Jose State and Cal State Fullerton, whom they are slated to face first at 9 p.m. CT on Friday.
