Texas A&M QB update: Mike Elko offers latest on where Conner Weigman, Marcel Reed stand
When Texas A&M needed a spark in last week’s game against LSU, Mike Elko made a bold move by replacing Conner Weigman with Marcel Reed. That led to questions about who will start at QB against South Carolina, and he offered the latest on where things stand.
Elko said the staff is still evaluating its options ahead of Saturday’s game. As the week of practice wraps up, the Aggies will figure out which quarterback puts them in the best position to stay undefeated in SEC play.
“I think we’re still kind of going through our process,” Elko said on The Paul Finebaum Show. “We’ll figure that out as we go into the weekend and come Saturday night, put out the guy that we think gives us the best chance to have success as a team.”
Weigman started last week’s game against LSU, completing 6-of-18 passes for 64 yards. But, when Texas A&M trailed 17-7, Elko opted to put Reed in the game – and he got the offense going. The Aggies scored on every drive after the switch en route to the primetime win over LSU. Reed completed both pass attempts for 64 yards and added 62 rushing yards and three touchdowns on the ground.
When it comes to a decision for the South Carolina game, Elko noted the fact both Weigman and Reed have SEC victories under their belts. As a result, he said Texas A&M would be in a good position regardless of who starts under center.
“I think we’re fortunate,” Elko said. “I think we have two quarterbacks who give us an opportunity to win football games. Both of them have won football games for us this year, both of them have won SEC football games for us this year and both of them have won games on the road this year.

“We feel fortunate. We don’t feel like we’re in a situation where it’s challenging. We’ve got two kids who really enjoy each other and enjoy the team, and we’re just counting our blessings, is where we are right now.”
As for when a decision could come down, considering Mike Elko spoke with Finebaum Thursday evening, he said it could be closer to game time. However, he tried his best to avoid giving too much away.
“Yeah, I think that’s probably the best way to sum it up,” Elko said when asked if it’d be a game-time decision. “And you’re gonna keep asking, I’m gonna keep giving you every neutral answer I possibly can.”
Elko did his best to avoid tipping his hand, but with another primetime game looming, the decision is going to be important. Texas A&M and South Carolina will square off Saturday at 7:30 p.m. ET in Columbia.
