Texas A&M QB battle: Mike Elko reveals timeline for decision on Conner Weigman, Marcel Reed
Texas A&M benched starting quarterback Conner Weigman for backup Marcel Reed in a game against LSU on Saturday, but the Aggies are undecided on a quarterback heading into this week’s South Carolina game. For now.
Coach Mike Elko addressed the timeline for making a decision on a starting quarterback on Wednesday on an SEC teleconference call.
“We have not made that decision yet,” Elko said. “We want to kind of get through the week and figure that out as we go.”
Marcel Reed didn’t throw much in the win over LSU on Saturday, going just 2-of-2 passing for 70 yards. But he did rush nine times for 62 yards and three touchdowns, powering the Aggies to a massive victory over the Tigers.
He’s got plenty of starting experience now, too, having filled in for Weigman while the latter was dealing with a sprained shoulder.
Reed helped lead the team to wins over Florida, Bowling Green and Arkansas before Weigman returned.
In anticipation of Saturday’s contest against South Carolina, Elko also revealed that the practice reps haven’t changed a whole lot. Marcel Reed’s not necessarily taking more snaps than before.

“Yeah, it’s kind of the same rhythm we’re always in,” Elko said. “We talked about not really having ones and twos, so everybody’s getting reps out there, getting ready to go.”
On the season, Marcel Reed has gone 45-of-81 passing (55.6%) for 655 yards, with six touchdowns and no interceptions. He has also run for 288 yards and five touchdowns, averaging 5.5 yards per carry.
Weigman is 62-of-109 passing (56.9%) for 782 yards, with three touchdowns against four interceptions. He’s also run for 98 yards.
Elko is confident in his group, regardless who starts on Saturday.
“I think we’re happy with where we’re at,” the first-year Aggies coach said. “I think the kids understand what’s at stake. They certainly understand the challenge.”
