One of Texas A&M‘s most promising offensive skill position players has reportedly suffered a season-ending injury, with ESPN reporting running back Rueben Owens is done.

On3’s Pete Nakos has confirmed Owens suffered an injury during practice and will require an MRI to unveil the extent of the damage. That MRI was scheduled for midday on Sunday.

ESPN’s Max Olson reports with Pete Thamel that Owens suffered a “lower body injury” in a scrimmage on Saturday and is expected to miss the season.

Rueben Owens was a 2023 SEC All-Freshman Team selection after rushing for 385 yards and three touchdowns a year ago. Owens also recorded 12 catches for 109 yards. He got work in on special teams, too, tallying 12 kick returns for 249 yards.

His 743 all-purpose yards led all true freshmen in the SEC in 2023.

Texas A&M still has a considerable amount of depth at the running back position, particularly after adding Stanford back EJ Smith, the son of NFL legend Emmitt Smith, during the offseason.

Smith has battled injuries during his career but is coming off the most productive season of his career, racking up 218 yards rushing and a touchdown while also catching 33 passes for 242 yards.

Veterans Le’Veon Moss and Amari Daniels are also both on the roster.

Daniels led the team in rushing last season with 532 yards and six touchdowns on 105 carries. Moss was right behind with 484 yards and five touchdowns on 96 carries.

So there will be some options to replace the production Rueben Owens might have provided this fall. Still, you never want to see any player go down with a season-ending injury, particularly not one with so much promise.

Texas A&M has less than three weeks to go until its season opener against Notre Dame on Aug. 31.
