Texas moving over to the SEC means they will once again be in the same conference as in-state rival Texas A&M. As excited as some fans are to have the football game back and go up against one another, at least one Longhorn and Aggie have to work with one another. Chris Del Conte and Trev Alberts are set to collaborate on certain issues.

Luckily, the two Lone Star State athletic directors appear to have a “great” relationship. Alberts said as such during the SEC Spring Meetings in Destin, putting the rivalry aside when it comes to important issues inside their respective athletic departments.

“I have a great relationship with Chris,” Alberts said. “Chris is a great guy. There will be things along the way here, like state law. There’s going to be things that have to be adjusted and looked at. There will be no acrimony between us in those areas.”

There is more to just football going out in Austin and College Station. Del Conte and Alberts are trying to make sure every sport succeeds in the SEC’s new era. Whether something pops up in local government or banding together when going through in-conference decisions.

However, make no mistake. Despite being aligned off the field, Albert still wants to go out there and beat Del Conte’s programs on it. Beating Texas, in any sport — but specifically football — is important to Texas A&M. Especially with Nov. 30 being the first football game the two have played since 2011.

“Obviously, we want to do well against each other but this is what makes college sports. It’s regional rivalries, it’s what builds the excitement. When you have programs like Texas and Texas A&M in the same state, so close together, it’s going to be fantastic. We’re thrilled about it and Chris will be a great partner. We’re looking forward to the rivalry.”

Alberts will experience a lot of firsts in the coming months at Texas A&M after leaving Nebraska to replace Ross Bjork. Arguably no event will be more important than the Aggies’ first football game at Texas, with a whole lot on the line.

There will still be a solid relationship with Del Conte, with the two needing to work together. Coming off an era where there was a lot of tension between Texas and Texas A&M, the rival athletic directors will put it to the side when required.
