Nearly five months after Trev Alberts took over at Texas A&M, details about his contract are coming to light, according to USA Today’s Steve Berkowitz. He will make $2.2 million per year as part of the deal, which runs through 2029.

Alberts left Nebraska months after signing a new contract at his alma mater. That deal paid him $1.7 million to start, but his salary would increase to $2.1 million per year starting in 2026, the university announced.

That agreement also included a $4 million buyout, and Texas A&M agreed to pay Nebraska after hiring Alberts to replace Ross Bjork, Berkowitz reported. His buyout at Texas A&M also starts at $4 million, but will decrease after April 1, 2026.

In addition, Alberts has a clause in his contract regarding “potential changes to the financial model for collegiate athletics,” according to Berkowitz. That’s similar verbiage as Mike Elko’s contract as the college sports world continues to change – particularly with potential House v. NCAA settlement approval looming.

Alberts played football at Nebraska and was one of the best linebackers in the country during his time in Lincoln. He won the Butkus Award following the 1993 season and was a consensus All-American. The Huskers also retired his No. 34.

After a short professional career and a stint in media, Alberts got into administration and was hired by Omaha in 2009. He stayed for over a decade until he earned the Nebraska job, joining the Huskers in 2021.

Just a few months after he took over at Texas A&M, Alberts had to go through a high-profile coaching search. Jim Schlossnagle left the Aggies after the College World Series final to take over as the head coach at Texas.

Although multiple candidates came up in rumors, Texas A&M opted to hire Michael Earley after UT announced he would follow Schlossnagle to Austin. Then, multiple players announced their intentions to withdraw from the transfer portal, which set a strong foundation for Earley as he takes over.

That was Alberts’ first major hire in College Station, and he’s now gearing up for his first college football season. Elko will be in his first season as head coach, replacing Jimbo Fisher, and the Aggies open the season with a marquee matchup. Notre Dame comes to Kyle Field for a Week 1 showdown in a game that could have College Football Playoff implications under the new 12-team format.
