Jim Schlossnagle explains why Texas A&M added Troy Wansing
Texas A&M baseball head coach Jim Schlossnagle detailed why the team added pitching transfer Troy Wansing from Purdue.
Simply put, Wansing brings great pitch speed and command as a lefty. With that, he’d be a welcomed addition to any staff in the country.
Schlossnagle talked up his new pitcher with good stuff on the way.
“Well, I mean, left handed pitching, I don’t know if it’s the rotation of the earth but it’s something strike throwers that are left handed seem to get outs,” Schlossnagle said. “Troy had a nice season at Purdue last year. He’s changed his body significantly, he’s refined his pitches …
“Now it’s just a matter of him executing pitches and I think just like a freshman coming here, or a junior college transfer, there’s an adjustment period and that’s what his challenge is going to be. That’s what it has been. You don’t have to be any better than you are in the bullpen, just go execute pitches and get outs.”
Schlossnagle opened up on what Wansing’s biggest challenge would be when takes the mound this spring.

“His challenge is going to be handling his emotions and handling the adrenaline so he doesn’t have an overdrive and when pitchers do that, then either their stuff isn’t as good or they don’t throw strikes,” Schlossnagle said. “So Troy just needs to check his emotions at the door and have a really businesslike approach and share the ball.
“Allow us to play defense behind him. He’s a lefty that gets up to 95 miles an hour with a good slider and changeup. But it’s about executing pitches and being consistent with those pitches, that’s going to make him a good pitcher so that’s what we’re trying to find.”
Wansing spent his first collegiate season at Purdue and pitched in 15 games last year. In 12 starts, Wansing went 4-4, had a 5.44 ERA, 61 strikeouts and 51.1 innings pitched.
Wansing is on a team that went to the College World Series in 2022. The Aggies went 2-2 during their stint in Omaha last spring, including 0-2 against Oklahoma while beating Texas and Notre Dame in between.
It was Schlossnagle’s first season as head coach and he went 42-20. He is 810-394 in his career.
