Following the departure of former coach Jim Schlossnagle for Texas, Texas A&M is moving on with its coaching search as it seeks to keep the program elevated at its current heights.

To that end, the Aggies have interviewed Wake Forest coach Tom Walter, as well as several other candidates. D1Baseball’s Kendall Rogers reports that, in addition to Walter, Oklahoma‘s Skip Johnson and Texas A&M’s Michael Earley have also interviewed for the job.

Walter just completed his 15th season with the Demon Deacons and has done a remarkable job transforming the program into an annual postseason contender. Wake Forest reached the College World Series in 2023, doing so for the first time since 1955.

The program was expected to compete for a spot in Omaha again this year but ran into more turbulence than expected.

Still, Walter’s overall record is hard to question. He was named the ACC Coach of the Year in 2023 thanks to that remarkable run to Omaha. He helped Wake Forest win the ACC Atlantic Division title in 2024.

Across his 15 seasons at Wake Forest, Walter has compiled a 456-361-1 (.558) overall record and a 194-228-1 (.460) record in ACC play. Wake Forest has averaged 44.3 wins per season over the last three years.

Johnson, another Texas A&M interviewee, meanwhile, is in his first head coaching stint. He has been with Oklahoma for seven years now and has produced a 229-153 (.599) overall record, with an 85-65 (.567) mark in Big 12 play.

Oklahoma won the Big 12 regular season title in 2024 and the Big 12 Tournament title in 2022.

Texas A&M is obviously looking for a coach who can keep the program competing deep into the postseason, as Schlossnagle did. Schlossnagle helped lead the Aggies to two College World Series appearances in the last three years.

The good news is if Walter or Johnson is the guy for the Aggies they should certainly have the coin to lure him away.

D1Baseball’s Kendall Rogers reports that the Aggies will have a full war chest to work with in hiring a new coach.

“I spoke to sources throughout last week with knowledge that Schlossnagle would consider going to Texas,” Rogers wrote on Twitter. “I was told if that happened, @AggieBaseball would pay whatever was needed to land an elite coach. A&M, given new ballpark coming/resources will be attractive. Buckle up.”

At this point, things will certainly bear monitoring when it comes to Texas A&M and Tom Walter.
