What Theo Melin Öhrström brings to Texas A&M
Texas A&M landed a commitment on Wednesday from 2023 tight end Theo Melin Öhrström, from Sweden.
On3’s Zack Carpenter wrote a story on Öhrström’s commitment and journey to football that can be found here.
Öhrström is listed at 6-foot-6, 243 pounds. He brings an impressive frame and intriguing upside to College Station.
Scouting Theo Melin Öhrström
On3’s Director of Scouting Charles Power had this to say about Öhrström.
“Theodor Melin Öhrström hit the college camp circuit with gusto this summer. He traveled with a group of European prospects (PPI) and hit a bunch of different campuses.”
Powers continued.
“We had the chance to see him at The Opening Finals in July,” he said. “Öhrström already has considerable size at 6-foot-6, 243 pounds. He moves fairly well for that size. We see Öhrström play as an outside receiver back in Sweden, which should give him some experience as a pass catcher. How he develops over the next two years will be key. He’s an older prospect for the 2023 class, as he’s already 18 years-old. With that said, Öhrström is still relatively inexperienced from a football standpoint. Coming from playing in Europe to Power Five football is a huge adjustment and one few others have made without a playing high school or junior college football in the United States. With that said, Öhrström showed enough on the camp circuit to create considerable intrigue about his upside.”
Öhrström’s place in the Aggies’ TE room
Carpenter noted that Theo Melin Öhrström is looking into reclassifying to the 2022 class, allowing him to get on campus a year early and get on track from an age standpoint, seeing as he’s already 18 years-old.
Should Öhrström reclassify, he would join 2022 four-star tight end Donovan Green as the second tight end in the Aggies recruiting class.
Green is listed at 6-foot-4 and hails from Dickinson, the same high school as Aggie standout tight end Jalen Wydermyer.
Behind Wydermyer, A&M has Blake Smith, Max Wright, Tyler Ondrusek, Fernando Garza, Baylor Cupp and Justin Mellenbruch at tight end.
Freshman quarterback Eli Stowers has also been moved to tight end in fall camp, though it is not known whether the move is permanent.

Green fits more in the mold of Smith and Wright, all three are listed closer to 6-foot-4. Theo Melin Öhrström fits closer to the mold of Wydermyer and Cupp, all three of which are 6-foot-5 or taller.
Jimbo Fisher’s history with TEs
Texas A&M head coach Jimbo Fisher’s offense has been heavily dependent on the tight end position.
In his time at Florida State, Fisher leaned on tight end Nick O’Leary from 2011-2014. In his four years, O’Leary had 1,591 total yards and 17 touchdowns. After O’Leary came Ryan Izzo, who now plays for the Houston Texans. From 2014-2017, Izzo had 761 receiving yards and six touchdowns.
At Texas A&M, Fisher had success with Jace Sternberger in 2018. Sternberger, now a member of the Green Bay Packers had 832 yards and 10 touchdowns on just 48 receptions before heading to the NFL.
Jalen Wydermyer might be the best that Fisher’s had. In two years, the junior has already posted a combined 953 receiving yards and 12 touchdowns.
This season, the Aggies will rely on Wydermyer and Baylor Cupp, a former blue-chip recruit who has struggled with injuries.
With Wydermyer expected to declare for the draft after the season, another tight end will be expected to step up. Second-year freshman Blake Smith very well could fill the role, as could Stowers, if the position change sticks or fellow freshman Fernando Garza.
Given his age and frame, if Theo Melin Öhrström is able to reclassify, the Aggies very well could find themselves another freshman tight end phenom in a similar vein to Wydermyer’s emergence in 2019.
