Texas football is set to join the Southeastern Conference in 2024 alongside longtime Big-12 Conference rival Oklahoma. And now, the Longhorns’ initial schedule has been revealed.

The conference realignment set to take place throughout college football in 2024 breeds excitement for fans wanting to challenge themselves against higher-quality opponents on a weekly basis.

The additions of the Longhorns and Sooners have also brought about major changes to the SEC’s traditional schedule.

At the conference’s league meetings in May, SEC commissioner Greg Sankey announced that once the two new schools arrive in 2024, the 16 programs will play an eight-game league schedule. Divisions will be abandoned.

“During this time of change, our fans will continue to enjoy traditional rivalries and begin to see new matchups presented by the addition of two historically successful football programs to the SEC,” Sankey said when the news of Texas and OU’s move to the SEC broke.

Three games were previously announced. Colorado State and Texas agreed to play each other during the 2024 season opener in 2019. A home-and-home series against Michigan will see the Longhorns travel to Ann Arbor. The Wolverines will head to Austin in 2027. Week 3’s matchup against UTSA was also set in 2019. The rest of the games have been added in no particular order.

As of this report, here is Texas’ 2024 football schedule:

Week 1 — vs. Colorado State, Aug. 31
Week 2 — at Michigan, Sept. 7
Week 3 — vs. UTSA, Sept 14

Home vs. Georgia
Home vs. Kentucky
Home vs. Mississippi State
Home vs. Florida
Away vs. Oklahoma (neutral)
Away at Texas A&M
Away at Arkansas
Away at Vanderbilt

Greg McElroy offers initial reaction to Texas’ 2024 SEC schedule

The 2024 SEC conference schedule was released Wednesday night, meaning Oklahoma and Texas now know exactly which teams they’ll face as they prepare to join the conference that season. The Longhorns drew some tough opponents, including rival Texas A&M

The Aggies and Longhorns have not faced each other since A&M left the Big 12 in 2011, and there is a lot of anticipation regarding their meeting. ESPN analyst Greg McElroy joined the schedule reveal show on SEC Network to offer his first thoughts on that matchup at Kyle Field as well as the rest of Texas’ SEC slate.

“How do you not have A&M first when listing off the upcoming opponents? That’s the one we got circled, right?” McElroy asked. “As a kid from the Dallas-Fort Worth area, I grew up a Big 12 guy and my backyard was Texas and Oklahoma. But right there next door was Texas and Texas A&M. The amount of vitriol that exists in that rivalry on both ends, knowing that it’s coming back for the first time since 2011.

“I’m sure Aggie faithful being as kind as they will have a nice, warm reception for their Longhorn brethren when they enter Kyle Field hopefully sometime around Thanksgiving.”
