Anthony Hill Jr. explains surprising reason for using Baker Mayfield jersey for Texas flag plant troll
Anthony Hill took his Red River Shootout celebration to midfield after beating Oklahoma, planting a Texas flag right on top of a Baker Mayfield jersey. He was joined by fellow defensive teammate Barryn Sorrell for the moment, making a statement at the Cotton Bowl. Later on social media, Hill posted a photo of himself with the Mayfield jersey ripped up with his caption clapping back at Danny Stutsman from the year before.
Nobody questioned Hill’s actions but there was some confusion as to why Mayfield and his No. 6 were on the uniform. The Texas linebacker explained on Monday, saying it’s just the first jersey he got from a fan in the crowd. Hill did not have any intent behind it, even claiming to be a fan of Mayfield when he was with the Sooners.
“To be honest, a fan had given me that jersey, just a random Texas fan, and that was just the first jersey that I had,” Hill said. “So we just kind of used that (because) it was the only jersey we had. So no hate for Baker Mayfield. I’m actually a big fan. I watched him play in college, so there’s no hate.”
Mayfield has long been vocal about his opinion of the Texas-Oklahoma rivalry, chiming in on the game even after leaving Norman. Now with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Mayfield was asked about Hill planting the flag, reminding Longhorn fans of his record in the game, and claiming to live “rent free” in their head.

“It’s just a kid from Austin, Texas, that went to Oklahoma and won his last two Red River games and has been rent free in their heads for almost a decade now,” Mayfield said.
Like Mayfield, Hill will likely remind people of his performances in the rivalry down the road. On Saturday, the sophomore recorded 11 tackles, 3.5 tackles for loss, four quarterback pressures, two sacks, and even forcing a fumble.
The postgame celebrations will be remembered for a long time too but according to Hill, no real intentions behind using the Mayfield jersey.
