Heading into his second season with Texas, backup quarterback is still the primary role Arch Manning plays. Quinn Ewers decided to return for the 2024 season and plans to be on the 40 Acres for at least one more campaign. While On3’s Andy Staples believes Manning will see action at some point, all he can do at this point is patiently wait his turn to be the full-time starter.

Steve Sarkisian does let Manning wear his recruiting hat, though. Texas has brought in some top talents over the last two cycles and the former Five-Star Plus+ product has certainly played his part. Whether recruits are coming in from Louisiana or offensive players being sold on playing in the system, it’s been a Manning staple.

“I’m still helping guys come in and help build our team for the future,” Manning said. “I do what I can to help them get on campus and come help us out.”

Wide receiver, specifically, has been an area Texas has thrived in since Manning announced his commitment in the summer of 2022. Three blue-chip players, headlined by five-star Johntay Cook, signed during the 2023 cycle. One year later, five-star Ryan Wingo was a huge pull for the Longhorns out of St. Louis, someone Manning has expressed excitement for.

“Wingo is going to be a stud,” Manning said at the Manning Passing Academy. “He’s going to play a lot this year. He’s just everything you want in a wide receiver.”

Sarkisian has dipped into the NCAA transfer portal to make immediate impacts at wide receiver. But by the time Manning sees the field on a full-time basis, likely beginning in 2025, Texas will be absolutely loaded with some homegrown wide receiver recruits.

Arch Manning prepared for any playing time during 2024 season

This year, Manning is the primary backup behind Ewers, who announced his return to Texas after last year’s College Football Playoff run. Maalik Murphy hit the transfer portal prior to the Sugar Bowl and committed to Duke, opening the door for the former Five Star Plus+ recruit to become QB2 in Austin.

As for how much playing time he expects, Manning said he’s getting ready for whatever’s thrown at him. With training camp quickly approaching, his focus is on improving his craft in case his number gets called.

“I feel like I’m getting better every day,” Manning said. “Just trying to stay ready. Anything can happen. I’m excited and I’m gonna be ready.”
