The transition period between freshman and sophomore year is where some players can take the biggest jump in college. It’s where Arch Manning currently sits, entering Year Two with the Texas Longhorns. While he is not slated to be the starting quarterback this season, Manning still wanted to make sure he improved heading into 2024.

Having the game slow down for him is where Manning worked this offseason. Manning knows his job is to deliver balls to the players head coach Steve Sarkisian has sprinkled throughout the Texas offense. While he has the capability of making a play on his own, letting others do their job was the next step forward.

“Not trying to make too many plays on our own,” Manning said. “Just let the offense come to me, get it in the playmaker’s hands and just trying to get better each day.”

Manning only got two playtime opportunities last season, both coming late in the year. Texas was up big against Texas Tech in the season finale, allowing the true freshman to run the offense. And then Manning’s second appearance came in the Big 12 Championship against Oklahoma State.

No passes were attempted in the latter but Manning completed two of five throws against Texas Tech, going for a total of 30 yards. The majority is from Johntay Cook, doing exactly what Manning discussed getting better at this offseason.

Manning’s pass to Cook only spanned six yards but the fellow freshman receiver turned upfield for an 18-yard gain.

Cook is one of the many guys Texas expects to break out this season and be prepared to work with Manning when the 2025 season comes around. Quinn Ewers might be the starter but making sure he is ready for an opportunity this year and beyond was another offseason goal.

“We have a bunch of new players with the portal and the new signing class,” Manning began. “You got to get the new chemistry down with them.”

If he’s not already, Manning will likely be the most discussed backup quarterback in college football next season. On3’s Andy Staples has even pegged him to start a game at some point during the 2024 season as Texas works toward a second consecutive College Football Playoff appearance.

Making sure improvements came was critical, no matter the playing time scenario. Sounds like mission accomplished for Manning just a few weeks before training camp begins.
