There is plenty of excitement around the Texas Longhorns football program heading into the 2022 college football season. The team loaded up with some big-time offensive prospects this offseason via the transfer portal. Not to mention they already have one of the best running backs in college football in Bijan Robinson in their backfield. Fox Sports’ Brady Quinn recently made an appearance on CBS Sports HQ to talk about how the ‘Horns need to fix their defense, something that has plagued for the program for quite some time.

“Well, obviously you’re always gonna try to win the conference and that’s always the goal you’re gonna start out with. They need to figure out a way to play better defense. It’s not just about Quinn Ewers and how he’ll handle the spotlight now being the quarterback at the University of Texas. I mean, it’s the highest touted recruit since Vince Young, who obviously brought them a national championship,” Quinn said.

“But that hasn’t been their Achilles heel. This school has been able to put up yards and points since Steve Sarkisian was there and even before he got there. It’s the defense that I mentioned earlier. And what they did this offseason was add really the defensive guru for a long time in the Big 12–Gary Patterson. Now, he’s not calling the defense. That’s still Pete Kwiatkowski. But he will put his footprint on this defense and help improve that side of the football,” Quinn said.

The Texas defense surrendered 425 yards per game last season–ranking them 100th in the nation in that stat category. They also allowed over 31 points per game, ranking them 99th out of 130 qualifying teams. That’s simply not going to get it done if the team wants to contend for Big 12 Championships.

Quinn Ewers was one of the highest-rated prospects in the modern recruiting era

Ewers was one of the highest rated players in college football recruiting history after starring for the Southlake Carroll Dragons (Southlake, Texas).

He was ranked the No. 1 overall player in America in the 2021 cycle, according to the On3 Consensus. He’ll get his chance in the coming years to prove he can live up to the lofty billing. It would be fascinating to watch him contend for the Heisman Trophy in the 2022 season, that’s for certain.

Fox Sports’ R.J. Young named Ewers as a sleeper candidate for the coveted hardware this year. The Longhorns should have plenty of weaponry in their offensive arsenal, it’ll just be a matter of making sure all the pieces click.

Isaiah Neyor was rated as the No. 2 wide receiver prospect in On3’s 2022 Transfer Portal Rankings. He was an electrifying deep threat for the Wyoming Cowboys last season, hauling in 44 catches for 878 receiving yards, while bringing in 12 touchdowns.

Neyor averaged 19.95 yards per catch, good enough for the sixth highest mark in college football. Not only will Ewers have Neyor to throw to, but he’ll also have Xavier Worthy, one of the most electrifying receivers in all of college football. Worthy set three Texas records last year as a true freshman, en route to earning Freshman All-American honors from On3 and many other media outlets. As a duo last season, Worthy and Neyor combined for 24 receiving touchdowns, leading the nation.

The Texas Longhorns kick off their 2022 college football season against the Louisiana-Monroe Warhawks. Kickoff for that one is slated for Sept. 3 at 8 p.m. EST.
