New details emerged following the arrest of Texas basketball head coach Chris Beard Dec. 12 as the coach reportedly received a medical evaluation before being taken to jail.

“Longhorns coach Chris Beard requested to be looked at by a medic before he was taken to the Travis County Jail, according to an Austin Police Department General Offense document detailing the situation surrounding his arrest on a charge of assault by strangulation/suffocation – family violence on Dec. 12,” Kate Winkle wrote for KXAN.

Beard was arrested in Austin for “Assault on a family/household member.” He also apparently was preventing the victim from breathing. Beard was booked with a third degree felony.

“The general offense document is heavily redacted, but mentions similar events to what the arrest affidavit detailed, including that Beard’s fiancée broke his glasses and that she said she was thrown to the ground and put in a chokehold for five seconds,” Winkle wrote. “It noted the woman initially called 911 at 12:15 a.m. shortly after the fight, and that police arrived at 2:12 a.m. after the call was downgraded ‘due to the suspect leaving the scene.’”

According to the report, Beard said his fiancé “began to take a couple of shots” at him when he allegedly defended himself following the alleged assault.

Beard, 49 years old, is in his second season as the head coach of the Texas men’s program. He took the job in the summer of 2021 after a successful few years with Texas Tech. After an up-and-down year in 2021-22, which featured an NCAA Tournament appearance, Beard has gotten a number of returners back plus a recruiting haul with a few five-stars. The result? A team that’s now 10-1 and ranked inside the No.7 in the AP Poll.
