Colt McCoy details Matthew McConaughey's relationship with Texas athletics
Matthew McConaughey is frequently at Texas football games and was just at the Longhorns loss to Washington in the Sugar Bowl earlier this week.
The actor attended the University of Texas and still loves UT athletics.
Former Texas star quarterback Colt McCoy appeared on The Pat McAfee Show on Friday and shared what kind of relationship McConaughey has with Texas.
“I mean, listen, McConaughey is an ultimate celebrity and he’s a fantastic guy, like good friend,” Colt McCoy said. “And people outside of the program, they like kind of think it’s kind of funny or whatever, but the dude seriously cares about the football team. He cares about all the sports; he loves the university.”
Monday night had to be tough on Matthew McConaughey as his Longhorns came up just short. But he has supported Texas through the good and bad and will continue to do so, according to McCoy.
Yes, Monday’s loss was disappointing, but it’s clear Texas is on an upward trajectory.
“This is his his way of trying to give back and be a supporter, and, you know, be friends with guys on the team and, you know, just be around,” McCoy said. “I think, you know, he cares. I talked to him after the game. We walked through the tunnel and like, I mean, I was disappointed and he was like, deeply disappointed, like, really cared, really bothered, really wanted to win that game. Like, he’s in, he’s involved.”
Texas should be right back in the mix for the College Football Playoff next year as the Longhorns have a lot of talent coming back.
You can bet Matthew McConaughey will be following along.
“You know, I mean, he’s one of the biggest names in the world and he’s standing on the sidelines every week and able to, you know, be friends with some of the guys and the coaches,” McCoy said. “And that’s — it’s part of it. He’s great.”

Colt McCoy answers if Texas is back amid NIL, move to SEC
Colt McCoy covered a number of topics was Pat McAfee, including the always fun question — ‘Is Texas back?’
He started by assessing their overall work in name, image, and likeness and said the operation they’re running down on The 40 Acres is one that has the resources to contend in the space.
“Obviously, NIL has changed the game, right?” said McCoy. “I think Nick Saban said it best. Like, it is what it is. It’s the semi-pro league, right?
“I think Texas has an edge there. I really do,” McCoy continued. “Sark, you know, his experience in the NFL, calling offense in the NFL? You know, seeing how the NFL works? I think, you know, college football is a little bit more corporate now. Texas has a lot of resources.”
