Colt McCoy’s time at Texas was straight out a movie. However, before fans ever rolled out the red carpet for him, McCoy experience top-tier entertainment.

During an appearance on “The Pat McAfee Show,” the former UT quarterback recalled an experience with movie star and well-known Texas diehard Matthew McConaughey.

“It’s 2005 and I’m a freshman, OK? And we’re going to the national championship,” McCoy said. “This is like the last day. I’m redshirting, I’ve just got a front row seat to all the all the glory and all the wins, we’re undefeated. Going the national championship, it’s the day before. It’s the last practice in our bubble before we head off to go to California to the Rose Bowl.

“McConaughey comes in kind of right at the end, and he puts his arm around Coach (Mack) Brown says, ‘Hey, like, I got to talk to the team. I want to talk to the team.’ So Coach Brown, like pulls everybody in. Like we’re literally getting — after this walkthrough, we’re going to the bus, going the airport, going to California. We’re the underdogs to USC.”

Texas needed the motivation. Texas and USC were the only two teams in the NCAA that season who entered bowl season undefeated. USC entered the game on a 34-game winning streak. It was the longest active streak in Division I-A.

The matchup had even more build-up due to the Heisman Trophy ceremony weeks earlier when USC’s Reggie Bush beat out Texas QB Vince Young for the coveted award. With so much on the line, McConaughey knew exactly what the team need to hear.

“Matthew starts talking and kind of just mumbling and finally he just says like, ‘You know, I had a dream, I got this song for you guys.’ And everybody’s kind of looking around, we’re holding. And he goes, ‘Somebody don’t think so. Somebody knows, so.’ We kind of like look around and like, ‘What is the dude talking about?’ And I kid you not like he does it again. ‘Somebody don’t think so. Somebody knows, so.’ And, bro, for 10 minutes we are jumping up and down, ‘Somebody don’t think so. Somebody knows, so.’

“We sang that all week long and nobody believed that we were gonna win a national championship. It was one of the best games ever in college football history, and we won and I’ll never forget that moment with McConaughey.”

Texas won, Young was named the Rose Bowl MVP and McConaughey again delivered a magical moment for the Longhorns. With Sarkisian at the helm of a budding Texas program, perhaps McConaughey will create a few more memories for soon-to-be Longhorns.
