Texas finds itself in a good position, taking an early lead against Miami. A win would be huge for the Longhorns, wanting to be in the driver’s seat in the Coral Gables Regional. Some extra sleep plus just one needed win would be a great way to spend a Sunday.

Head coach David Pierce gave his in-game assessment of Texas, talking about the pitching performance of LeBrarron Johnson. He was proud of how his starting pitcher is currently attacking Miami batters, especially when a few players have found a way on base.

“They did a good job both innings of fighting off pitches and creating some base hits as well on a couple of walks,” Pierce said. “I thought LeBrarron did a nice job attacking when he got into some trouble and didn’t let it get away from him.”

Johnson having a lengthy outing for Texas would be something Pierce welcomes. Throughout any regional, balancing the bullpen can become a real challenge. Having someone like Johnson really show out, especially in a 1-0 game, can do wonders throughout the NCAA Tournament.

There is still a long way to go but so far, Johnson is performing out of his mind for the Longhorns. Even if there have been a few situations to work out of.

Of course, Texas will have to continue to get some run support for Johnson. Two early home runs were a good start, with one coming from right fielder Dylan Campbell. He has been on a tear of his own, extending his hitting streak to 36 games.

Pierce revealed what his message to his team in between innings before coming to the plate. Miami has some guys who have velocity. The goal for Pierce is to let that do most of the work for Texas as smooth swings are key.

“It’s just about staying in the middle of the field and not trying to do too much,” Pierce said. “Let their velocity supply your power and just work easy.”

Having an early lead is obviously advantageous but Texas will still have some work to do in order to keep their position. Miami is not going to go away easily, especially as the hosts. The home crowd will not be afraid to get behind the Hurricanes.

Pierce will need to keep his message to players consistent as they look to close out what would be a massive victory on the march to Omaha.
