LOOK: Quinn Ewers arrives in Austin to begin Texas career
Less than a year after reclassifying from the 2022 class to the 2021 class, Quinn Ewers entered the NCAA Transfer Portal, ending his Ohio State career and returning home to Austin, Texas.
Ewers, who attended Southlake Carroll High School, originally committed to Texas out of high school before ultimately switching his commitment to Ohio State. After one short season in Columbus, Ewers moved to Texas — and finally, he’s on campus.
Ewers was ranked as a five-star recruit according to the On3 Consensus, a complete and equally weighted industry-generated average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies. Additionally, the No. 1 quarterback in the 2022 class was a Five-Star Plus+ prospect, earning the coveted ranking from all major recruiting sites.
Ewers commits to Texas
When Ewers entered the transfer portal, Texas, Texas Tech, and Texas A&M were reportedly the three schools in the running. TCU eventually got in the mix, getting a visit from the quarterback. In the end, the Longhorns and Red Raiders battled it out with Steve Sarkisian coming out on top.
Before ending up with the Buckeyes, Ewers committed to Texas in August of 2020 under then-head coach Tom Herman. After results on the field started to go south for the Longhorns, he reopened his recruitment. Ryan Day was able to haul in one of the highest-rated quarterbacks ever.

Ewers got snaps in an Ohio State uniform in just one game, handing the ball off in the blowout win against Michigan State. He was never given the opportunity to attempt a pass and sometimes did not even travel with the Buckeyes to away games.
That will change quite quickly in Austin, where he is already seen as the likely starter for next season. Sarkisian struggled with the quarterback position consistently last season, flipping back and forth between Hudson Card and Casey Thompson.
Getting an elite quarterback on campus has been an issue for the Longhorns ever since Colt McCoy left after the 2009 season. Ewers will now have the expectations to bring the program back to those levels.
