Former Texas Longhorns offensive lineman Tyler Johnson has been in the transfer portal since March 31, looking for a new place to play college football next season. He announced his destination on Friday, staying within the state and committing to the Houston Cougars.

Getting on the field was a struggle for Johnson, only making one appearance during his time in Austin. Former offensive line coach Herb Hand got him out there during the 2020 Alamo Bowl against the Colorado Buffaloes, helping the Longhorns gain over 600 offensive yards.

Under, current position coach Kyle Flood and head coach Steve Sarkisian, Johnson was not able to acquire playing time.

Johnson was ranked a four-star prospect coming out of high school according to the On3 Consensus, a complete and equally weighted industry-generated average that utilizes all four major recruiting services. He was the No. 69 overall prospect and No. 9 offensive tackle. Originally out of Conroe, TX, Johnson was a top-15 in-state player in the 2019 recruiting class, coming in at No. 12.

According to the On3 Consensus transfer portal rankings, Johnson ranked as the No. 14 offensive tackle available this cycle. He was the second-highest ranked uncommitted prospect at the position, only behind Amarius Mims.

Outside of Houston, the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets were the only other program to offer Johnson after entering the transfer portal. Deciding to stay close to home, the offensive tackle will instantly become a huge factor in head coach Dana Holgerson’s offense for the 2022 season.

As for the Texas offensive line, their 2022 recruiting class features six offensive linemen, with two being On3 Consensus five-star prospects. IOL Devon Campbell and OT Kelvin Banks will be joining the Longhorns in the fall, hoping to compete for immediate playing time. Another interior guy, Cole Hutson, is the only of the six already on campus going through spring practice.

Tyler Johnson will be protecting new Houston quarterback

The rise of K.J. Jefferson as one of the most electrifying quarterbacks in college football for the Arkansas Razorbacks has forced their other quarterbacks to search elsewhere in the transfer portal for playing time. On Friday evening, former Razorback quarterback Lucas Coley announced on Twitter that he’ll be playing his college football next season with the Houston Cougars.

Coley joins former Texas offensive lineman Tyler Johnson as players that transferred to the Cougars on Friday.

Below is Coley’s announcement.
