Former Texas WR Johntay Cook takes pointed shot at Quinn Ewers, report of portal tampering
According to On3’s Pete Nakos, Texas quarterback Quinn Ewers has received a $6 million offer to return and enter the NCAA Transfer Portal.
His former teammate, wide receiver Johntay Cook, evidently doesn’t believe he’s worth the money. He took a pointed shot at the Longhorns signal-caller on social media, “Wasting yall money fr,” he responded to the story.
Cook spent two seasons with Ewers at Texas, before transferring to Washington this past offseason. It’s obvious he doesn’t think too highly of his now-former teammate’s abilities though, even with Ewers leading the Longhorns to the College Football Playoff during back-to-back seasons.
During the 2024 campaign, Cook tallied eight receptions for 137 yards and two touchdowns. Those numbers were nearly identical to his true freshman season in 2023 when he recorded eight catches for 136 yards. However, he didn’t score a touchdown that season.
Meanwhile, speculation has run rampant about what Ewers, a former No. 1 recruit, will do after the season. All signs have pointed to Ewers entering the 2025 NFL draft, but sources tell Nakos that tampering has reached an all-time high with multiple Power Four schools making efforts to get the quarterback in the transfer portal.

Additionally, returning to Texas for the 2025 season does not appear to be an option for Ewers, with former No. 1 recruit Arch Manning on track to start next season.
While it hasn’t been revealed which teams are tampering and attempting to get Ewers on their side, there’s plenty of programs who could use a quarterback of his caliber in 2025. If the NFL doesn’t give Ewers the response he desires, he could feasibly become a mercenary through the portal, similar to Ohio State’s Will Howard or Miami’s Cam Ward.
Regardless, it doesn’t seem as if Quinn Ewers and Johntay Cook will be keeping in touch after their time together in Austin. It’s evident there isn’t a lot of love between the wide receiver and his former quarterback, and that’s just how it goes sometimes.
