While college basketball has been run by freshmen in years past, the 2022-2023 season has been different. If a team is going to make a run in the NCAA Tournament in March, experience is going to play into the equation. Not many are as experienced as Texas, even with a brand new head coach like Rodney Terry.

None are as experienced as forward Timmy Allen, really emerging as a leader for the Longhorns down the stretch. He is not the only one though, with guys such as Marcus Carr and Dylan Disu playing a role as well.

Allen said there is an “ultimate trust” with everyone in the program. Not just between the players but the coaching staff as well. When Texas is making its hopeful run in March, experience playing together is going to play a huge factor.

“We just got the ultimate trust,” Allen said. “We have a group of guys that have been there before. A number of us have over 100 games played. You can never underestimate the value of experience.

“Especially at the time of the year like this when games are possession games and you really got to grind out possession by possession, knowing detailed scouting report, what exactly what we’re trying to do. We just have no rattle, no shake. All confidence, all trust in each other and our coaching staff.”

Allen is in his fifth year of college basketball, transferring into Texas via Utah. While his numbers have dipped quite a bit, the quality and depth the Longhorns have at their disposal play a huge factor. Allen is still getting over 10 points and five rebounds a night.

Timmy Allen breaks down facing Jonathan Tchamwa Tchatchoua

Baylor looks different compared to the Jan. 30 matchup. Two players have rejoined the lineup and become a key part of the rotation. Head coach Scott Drew has seen Langston Love and Jonathan Tchamwa Tchatchoua make impacts over the past few weeks.

Allen recently broke down facing off against Tchamwa Tchatchoua. The injury suffered against Texas was once Allen says is still on his mind but admires the journey back to playing. He knows if Baylor is going to be slowed down, limiting Tchamwa Tchatchoua will be key.

“The big guy down low does a lot for them and we know that,” Allen said. “Unfortunately, his injury happened against us last year. We got a lot of love and respect for him in that aspect. He’s a great player and demands some attention. So, we got to be locked in on the details with that.”
