Greg McElroy: ‘This is the Texas we’ve been waiting for’
Greg McElroy was thrilled to finally see the Texas of old, as in, the Longhorns from earlier this season.
At one point, Texas was the No. 1 team in the country. But there’s been a lull lately. Not after Saturday’s dominating win over Florida.
This is what we’ve been waiting for, according to McElory. Quinn Ewers looked like his old self and the defense was suffocating.
“This is the Texas we’ve been waiting for,” McElroy said on Always College Football. “We’ve been waiting for this. And I’m so happy that it came to the surface, finally, because it’s been a while since we saw this Texas (like) against Michigan. But Michigan now has kind of gone on to feel like, I mean, come on, is that a good win? No, they’re a .500 football team, and I don’t think Florida’s elite either, by any stretch, especially this version of Florida with a backup quarterback.
“But it’s been a while since it feels like Texas kind of been playing with their food a little bit, man, like their offense just, I don’t know, it’s just kind of lacked a little bit to me. Well, finally, we know that they can defend. I am not at all going to spend any time worrying or concerning myself with what Texas has on the defensive side. That’s a really good group, a championship caliber defense.”

Ewers has been rusty since his return from an oblique injury. Arch Manning filled in just fine, but Saturday’s win over the Gators was the first one to really showcase all the talent across the board.
“The offense has been the thing that’s been holding me back a little bit. This was a complimentary win,” McElroy said. “Now let’s look at Quinn Ewers and his performance, because that has been an area of concern since the oblique injury, right …
“Based on what my expectations maybe for Quinn are just a little bit too high. Maybe they are. Maybe I just think too highly of what I expect from him I expect him at this point of his career to be perfect, and that’s not fair, because he’s been a little rusty, it appears, coming back but this was only the second game this year, in which he had multiple touchdown passes and no turnovers.”
If this is the type of Ewers Texas gets the rest of the way, the Longhorns could be SEC champions and have a first round bye in the College Football Playoff. Of course, that only helps the national title hopes.
