WATCH: Rodney Terry gets emotional when discussing his Dad after Big 12 Tournament title

Rodney Terry is in the midst of a dream season, leading Texas to a Big 12 Tournament championship on Saturday night. He was named the interim head coach in the middle of the season and may be on his way to getting the full-time job. However, living in the moment is key to Terry, especially after the recent passing of his father.
Terry was emotional at the podium after cutting down the nets, saying he dedicated this season to his Dad. You can hear in his voice, when he is able to speak, how much it would have meant to have his father around to watch Texas win a championship under his guidance.
“Really tried to dedicate this season to my Dad,” Terry said. “I lost my Dad in August. He would be really excited right now.”
Before talking about his Dad, Terry talked about how important living in the moment is to him. It’s something he preaches to his players on a daily basis, no matter the situation. Yes, coaches are hired to win basketball games. However, being a life mentor is just as, if not more important.
“Man, we’ve just really tried to enjoy this journey,” Terry said. “Really tried to live where my feet are every day. Like I tell my guys all the time, live in the present. You can’t control the future or the past. Just live in the present. It’s a great day to be alive. I say that every day to our guys.”

Brock Cunningham confirmed Terry is true to his word. When asked why he believes Terry should be named the permanent head coach, the fifth-year man said because of his teachings.
“His appreciation for every day,” Cunningham said. “You could be coming off a bad loss or a great win. He’s still going to appreciate the day and have a good attitude going into that day.”
Terry has clearly had an impact on Texas players both on and off-the-court during his short time in charge. He was considered a top assistant under Chris Beard but is now thriving as a head coach.
