The Texas Longhorns look a little bit different at quarterback this season. Last year’s starting quarterback, Casey Thompson, is now at Nebraska. The Longhorns also brought in Ohio State transfer Quinn Ewers, who is now competing with returner Hudson Card for the starting job.

Card is set to enter his third season in the Texas program. He attempted just three passes as a true freshman in 2020, and completed 51 of his 82 attempts for 590 yards, five touchdowns and one interception with one rushing touchdown last season.

When asked about Texas adding Ewers, Card said that all he is focused on is himself, and that being at Texas felt like the right decision for him, even with the addition of Ewers as competition.

“Honestly I try to focus on myself and I try not to listen to all the outside noise and the media and that sort of thing,” Card said. “Just really talk to the people closest to me in my circle and just do what’s best for me. Like I said, just trusting God and his faith and just showing me where he wants me to be and I felt like this is where he wants me to be at this time.”

While Ewers brings a lot of promise as a highly touted prospect, Card brings experience to the Texas quarterback room. At this point in the competition, he is hoping that can give him an edge in the battle for the starting job.

“Well I think it’s just something, everyone has different tangibles to bring,” said Card. “Obviously for me, I have a little bit of experience and I’m just going to try to use that in my advantage and just learn from last year and what I’ve been through and just trying to improve from last year.”

Card isn’t afraid of competing with Ewers

Ewers is a former five-star plus recruit in the 2021 class, coming in as the top overall player last year. He was originally part of the 2022 class but reclassified to join the Buckeyes a year early. He did not play last season, but Ewers is a highly valued quarterback and has a lot of long-term potential. But Card isn’t backing down from competing with Ewers for the starting job.

Even though Card spent most of last season as Thompson’s backup at Texas, he knows that he is at where he wants to be. It could have been easy for Card to enter the transfer portal to look for an easier path to playing time, but he instead chose to stick things out and embraced the competition with Ewers.

“I mean, this is where I’ve always wanted to play,” Card said. “It’s been my dream school. There’ll be competition everywhere, so I decided just to give it my best shot – and a lot of it, too, is faith and that sort of thing. It’s just where I want to be at this moment, so I’m going to try to take advantage of it.”
