Iowa State transfer Tyrese Hunter has committed to Texas, he tells On3.

“Texas was my choice because I felt as if was the best fit and opportunity for me moving forward in my path,” Hunter said to On3. “Coach (Chris) Beard, the whole coaching staff, and my now teammates made me feel at home when I came on my visit! Everything felt organic like it was meant to be! I love the vision that coach Beard and his staff has for the program and I want to be apart of that! Straight hunger and dog mentality!”

The 6-foot-0 point guard averaged 11 points, 3.5 rebounds, and 4.9 assists as a freshman for the Cyclones this season. He also shot 39% from the field and 27.4% from three-point range.

Hunter, a Wisconsin native and Big-12 Freshman of the Year, chose the Longhorns over Tennessee, Kansas, Louisville, Gonzaga, and Purdue.

Texas signed four prospects in their No. 3 ranked 2022 class out of the high school ranks. On3 Consensus No. 2 Dillon Mitchell, No. 21 Arterio Morris, and No. 92 Rowan Brumbaugh are joined by 6-6 three-star Alex Anamekwe

The Longhorns also return each of their three double-digit scorers from last season with Timmy Allen, Marcus Carr, and Andrew Jones. 

New Mexico State transfer Sir’Jabari Rice joins Hunter in this transfer class. The 6-foot-4 shooting guard was second-team All-WAC last year after averaging 11.9 points and 3.1 assists and shooting 34.1% from three.

Coming out of high school, Hunter was rated as a four-star prospect, ranking 39th nationally in the class of 2021. He chose the Iowa State Cyclones over scholarship offers from Marquette, Louisville, Minnesota, Miami, Texas A&M, Creighton, UConn, and others.
