With the season right around the corner, the position battles across the country are coming to a close. One of the most important ones with still no answer yet is the quarterback competition going on at Texas between Quinn Ewers and Hudson Card. To On3’s Ivan Maisel, that is the contest that has the most of his attention at the moment.

Maisel discussed some of the remaining quarterback competitions in the nation during an episode of ‘3 Questions’ alongside JD PicKell. He says the back and forth between the two former Top-5 QBs in their On3 Consensus classes is the one that has everyone’s curiosity.

“I think, like everybody else, I’m really curious about what’s going on on the Forty Acres at Texas,” said Maisel. “Quinn Ewers has such a great reputation coming out of high school…Meanwhile you got a guy in Hudson Card who has played, who works hards, (and) he’s efficient. He’s just not as naturally gifted as Ewers.”

Card has played sparingly in nine games over his two seasons at Texas. He has thrown for a 60.5% completion percentage with five touchdowns. The transfer of Casey Thompson appeared to give Card the keys of the offense for 2022. However, the transfer of Ewers from Ohio State changed that. As the No. 1 QB in the 2021 class, Ewers spent a season practicing in Columbus before making the move back to the Lone Star State.

While Card is the somewhat proven commodity, Ewers is the question mark talent. Both have their pros and cons to being the Longhorn’s starter in the opener. As both make their final push to earn the job, Ivan Maisel believes that it may not matter as this could continue on until their Week 2 matchup against the Crimson Tide.

“Which one is able to best produce on the field? That’s what we’re waiting to see,” Maisel said. “It’s one of those things we may not get an answer to until they play Louisiana-Monroe. We may not even get an answer until Alabama, but they better be able to play against Alabama.”

With other questions being answered around the country, this competition is so intriguing to people like Ivan Maisel that it may continue to come into play throughout the season in Austin. Steve Sarkisian has two talented options but must put them both in their place on the depth chart. He may find his starter in the beginning, but this is a contest that might go the distance in the end.
