Jake Majors injury: Texas center leaves game following dirty block on Clemson
It looked like Quinn Ewers threw a pick-six late in the second quarter on Saturday, but a blindside block penalty on Clemson took the touchdown off the board. Texas center Jake Majors took a huge hit, which drew the penalty, and he left the field slowly.
Majors didn’t return in the first half after the play, and ESPN’s Laura Rutledge reported he headed to the locker room. He’s a key piece of the Texas offensive line, starting nearly every game in which he’s played over his five years in Austin.
Jake Majors’ status for the second half will be worth watching as Texas and Clemson square off in the first round of the College Football Playoff. The Longhorns get the ball out of the break after deferring.
Texas took a commanding 28-10 lead into the halftime locker room after putting together some big plays on offense. Quinn Ewers looked strong through the first two quarters, completing 11 of 14 passes for 141 yards and a touchdown, along with an interception that would’ve been a pick-six if not for a Clemson penalty.
The run game was also on full display against a struggling Clemson defense. Quintrevion Wisner was also an important part of the attack, taking 10 carries for 80 yards and two touchdowns.

On the Clemson side, Cade Klubnik had an up-and-down go out of the gate. He completed 12 of 19 passes for 117 yards and a touchdown along with an interception. The Tigers’ running game was also quiet, totaling just 65 yards – with Adam Randall leading the charge with three carries for 42 yards, including a 41-yard breakaway.
Speaking with ESPN’s Taylor McGregor on his way to the locker room, Dabo Swinney pointed out his defense’s struggles against Texas in the first half. That was going to be a big part of the conversation during halftme.
“We’ve got to get in there and talk about it,” Swinney said. “I mean we can’t stop them right now, so we’ve got to find a way.”
Clemson punched its ticket to the College Football Playoff by defeating SMU in the ACC Championship to become one of the five highest-ranked conference champions. Texas, meanwhile, fell to Georgia in the SEC title game, but still made the field as an at-large team and did enough to host a game.
