According to Kirk Bohl of The Houston Chronicle, Texas starting pitcher Jared Spencer will miss the remainder of the 2025 season. Shoulder surgery is going to be required for the Longhorns’ Friday night ace. A big blow for head coach Jim Schlossnagle this late in the campaign.

“Texas ace Jared Spencer will have shoulder surgery Monday and is out for the rest of the season, a source told the Houston Chronicle,” Bohls said via X.

Spencer made his usual start last Thursday against Auburn but was quickly pulled from the game. He did not even finish three innings and immediately headed back to the Texas locker room. The night finished with 2.2 innings, two hits allowed, two earned runs, one walk, and a strikeout.

Nothing official has yet to be announced. When speaking to reporters earlier on Thursday, head coach Jim Schlossnagle was honest about where Spencer stood. More medical visits are on the schedule but Schlossnagle did not sound too optimistic about the future.

“Jared is going to visit medical people today and try and figure out what the best long-term decision is for him,” Schlossnagle said. “He’s not going to pitch anytime soon, unless we get some awesome news.”

Heading into the Auburn game, Spencer had made nine appearances for Texas after transferring in from Indiana State. He has worked in 49.2 innings with his ERA just a few ticks above three at 3.08. Opposing batters are hitting just .215 against him.

Texas gearing up for massive showdown against Texas A&M

April 25 has been circled on a lot of calendars since the schedule came out in the Lone Star State. The return of the Texas-Texas A&M rivalry, within the same conference, was going to bring plenty of eyes. But Friday night will have a little extra edge.

Schlossnagle will be going up against his old program, one he infamously left after a loss in the College World Series championship series. The school they hate the most in College Station, Schlossnagle is now their leader.

Disch-Faulk will be the stadium playing host. Texas has been as good as anybody in college baseball this season, while Texas A&M has caught fire of late. Not having Spencer out there will be a big blow for the Longhorns but one they hope to overcome.

SEC baseball produces on a weekly basis. This weekend series from Austin will bring a whole lot more emotion, though.
