Jim Schlossnagle is just moments removed from losing the College World Series Finals with Texas A&M. Tennessee was the one celebrating after the final out, winning their first national championship in program history. But despite the games being played, there was still an outside story surrounding Schlossnagle.

Texas announced David Pierce would be fired on Monday afternoon, hours before the deceive Game 3 was being played. Schlossnagle has been linked to the job and was asked about his interest during a postgame press conference. He was not too thrilled with the question after falling short in Omaha, citing what he gave up to take the Texas A&M job in 2022.

“I think it’s pretty selfish of you to ask me that question, to be honest with you,” Schlossnagle said following the game. “I left my family to be the coach at Texas A&M. I took the job at Texas A&M to never take another job again, and that hasn’t changed in my mind.

“That’s unfair to talk about something like that. That would be like you asking Montgomery if he’s going to sign in the draft. But I understand you gotta ask the question, but I gave up a big part of my life to come take this job and I’ve poured every ounce of my soul in this job and I’ve given this job every single ounce I can possibly give it. Write that.”

Coaches moving between Texas and Texas A&M is almost unheard of with the two being bitter, bitter in-state rivals. And with the Longhorns officially moving into the SEC in just a week, Schlossnagle hypothetically leaving would sting even more in College Station.

The relationship Schlossnagle has with Texas athletic director Chris Del Conte is why there is any kind of rumblings. TCU was where the duo grew to know each other, working together for years, and having success on the baseball diamond.

Whether or not Schlossnagle winds up being the hire, Texas is going to swing for the fences. Del Conte is known for attempting to go out and make splashy hires and has been successful in the past. None would be bigger than taking Schlossnagle away from Texas A&M, though.
