Kelvin Banks is widely considered one of the best left tackles in college football. Check any mock draft out there, the Texas star is projected to be picked in the first round, if not somewhere in the top 10. He has been a starter since his first game back in 2022, protecting Quinn Ewers.

There are still players who are able to get after Banks in practice. Banks revealed Trey Moore and Barryn Sorrell are the two who cause him fits on a daily basis. Going best on best can be how players develop and Banks has gone up on two great ones.

“The two biggest guys who give me fits — I’ll say it’s Trey Moore and Barryn Sorrell,” Banks said Wednesday on SEC Network. “Those two guys, they work really hard with me every day. Hopefully, I’m pushing them as well so I can give a couple guys fits.”

Pass rusher has not been Texas’ strength since Steve Sarkisian arrived. But Sorrell has been a known commodity for a couple of seasons now. He finished the 2023 season with 4.5 tackles for a loss and 4.0 sacks, both amongst the leaders on the team.

Moore is a guy Steve Sarkisian and Pete Kwiatkowski were able to bring in through the NCAA transfer portal. Previously at UTSA, a huge step up in competition is going to take place when going up against SEC left tackles. Getting reps against guys like Banks is a great way to prepare.

Texas should be able to use both guys in multiple situations. Banks described the different styles the two have, with one trying to run through you while the other might put a couple moves before leaving you in the dust.

“They’re two different type of pass rusher,” Banks said. “Barryn more of a power guy. Trey more of an all around finesse guy. Those two looks, being able to go up against that every day really helps me a lot.”

Anytime you hear the discussion surrounding Texas and Oklahoma to the SEC, the first thing mentioned is play at the line of scrimmage. It’s on a different level in the SEC and moving over from the Big 12 will be a transition.

Texas will feel good with Banks protecting the blindside. Getting after opposing quarterbacks is where some answers are needed. Sorrell can continue his good run in Austin while Moore could bring a new dynamic to the Longhorns’ pass rush.
