Texas will begin Big 12 play in a hostile environment on Saturday, with Texas Tech hosting the Longhorns at Jones AT&T Stadium. There is a potential Steve Sarkisian could trot his team onto the field without one of their defensive leaders, after DeMarvion Overshown was suspended for the first half for targeting.

Occurring in the second half against UTSA, Overshown made a hit on quarterback Frank Harris, which the referees thought was worthy of a penalty. A review confirmed the linebacker’s ejection and then suspension against the Red Raiders. Immediately after the game, Sarkisian said Texas would appeal.

On Monday, Sarkisian provided an update on the process of getting Overshown’s first-half suspension overturned. He said Texas has sent the appeal to the Big 12 but there was not much past that news. Sarkisian has not been given a response nor has the conference given a timeline as to when the decision will be made.

“We appealed,” Sarkisian said during his Monday press conference. “We sent it in yesterday. It’s a forum and video that you fill out. And so, we’ll see. I haven’t heard back yet and I don’t know the exact timetable. But yes, we did.”

Everybody involved with the Texas program has voiced their displeasure with the targeting call, including Overshown himself. He sent a message out on Twitter, asking the Big 12 to “free” him before facing off against Texas Tech. While Overshown would still see the field on Saturday, losing the linebacker for two quarters would still be a big deal.

Overshown is a fifth-year player for the Longhorns and has starred in all three games. He has recorded 23 tackles, 2.5 tackles for a loss, and a pass breakup. If the Big 12 does not overturn the call, Overshown’s absence would be a major loss for Texas.

DeMarvion Overshown called for targeting vs. UTSA

Below is the play Overshown was called for targeting. He came on a blitz from his middle linebacker position, making head-to-head contact with Harris. The flag was not originally thrown by the refs but after a replay review, Overshown was ejected from the game.

Potentially the most annoying part — the game was already out of reach in the fourth quarter. Texas was comfortably ahead and cruising toward their second win of the season. A frustrating situation overall for the linebacker and Sarkisian.
