As Texas prepares for the College Football Playoff, the Longhorns learned their backup quarterback would be entering the transfer portal. Maalik Murphy is preparing to transfer, and he told ESPN’s Pete Thamel he will not be with the team through the CFP.

Murphy told Thamel he would’ve liked to stay through the end of the season, but the timing didn’t work out for that to happen. Instead, he’ll prepare to leave the program and take his talents elsewhere.

“It’s nothing against Texas at all,” Murphy told Thamel. “I’m doing this purely for me and my future. In my eyes, I’ll always be a Longhorn and a part of this great team.”

Maalik Murphy served as Texas’ primary backup for most of the year and made two starts in place of Quinn Ewers after he suffered an injury. In seven appearances, he completed 40 of 71 passes for 477 yards, three touchdowns and three interceptions.

Murphy played high school football at Junipero Serra (CA) High School, where he was a four-star prospect. He was the No. 205 overall recruit in the 2022 cycle, according to the On3 Industry Ranking, a weighted average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies.
