Maalik Murphy releases heartfelt statement after entering transfer portal
Maalik Murphy has released a statement on his decision to enter the transfer portal. Wednesday night, news broke the Texas quarterback was planning to transfer, and he officially hit the portal on Thursday.
“I would like to say thank you to all of Texas and the entire Longhorn community,” Murphy wrote on X. “For accepting and supporting me, a kid from the west coast as one of your own. The time I had on the 40 Acres will live with me forever. I’m extremely grateful to have played in the burnt orange.”
This past season, Murphy served as Texas’ primary backup, but he made two starts in place of Quinn Ewers after he suffered an injury. In seven appearances, he completed 40 of 71 passes for 477 yards, three touchdowns and three interceptions. Rather than return to Austin for another season, though, Murphy will now take his talents elsewhere.
Maalik Murphy’s decision to enter the portal became public on Wednesday, but he told ESPN’s Pete Thamel he won’t be with Texas for the College Football Playoff. He said the timing didn’t allow him to be with the team for the Sugar Bowl against Washington, but he’s now gearing up for his next steps.
“It’s nothing against Texas at all,” Murphy told Thamel. “I’m doing this purely for me and my future. In my eyes, I’ll always be a Longhorn and a part of this great team.”
