Marcus Carr thankful to have Rodney Terry lead team through difficult times
It has been a topsy-turvy season for the Texas Longhorns men’s basketball program. In the early part of the season, the team had to make an emergency change at head coach following the firing of former head coach Chris Beard due to domestic violence charge stemming from an altercation between him and his partner. The Longhorns would promote assistant head coach Rodney Terry to the head coaching position to finish out the year.
Terry has done an admirable job keeping the Longhorns as one of the top programs in the country, currently ranked No. 8 in the nation. And his success has not gone unnoticed. Following their close overtime victory against the Oklahoma Sooners on Saturday, guard Marcus Carr said he was thankful to have Terry leading the team through the difficult situations they have faced.
“It has been huge; on the court, off the court. You know, we start every single day in the morning, and it’s good morning; it’s great to be here,” said Carr. “We’re all thankful to be alive, and the coach does a good job of, before we even start talking about basketball, just making sure we understand where we’re at. We’re all grateful to just be here and be breathing every single day and thankful to have the opportunity of life. So, coach definitely puts that energy into us. And I definitely think it spreads throughout the whole team.”
Terry has been able to keep his young talented squad focused despite the ups and downs of the season. And thanks to that, Texas has a strong opportunity to win the Big 12 regular season title, along with a possible number one seed in the upcoming NCAA tournament.
Terry reacts to news Chris Beard had domestic violence charge dropped
The Texas Longhorns survived a thrilling overtime matchup against their heated rival Oklahoma on Saturday. But after the game, current Longhorns head coach Rodney Terry was asked about former head coach Chris Beard. Terry, who was a part of Beard’s staff, was asked what his reaction was to the news of the former Longhorns’ domestic violence charge being dropped.

“You know what, I have not had a chance to speak directly to coach Beard. But again, like I’ve said before, I love him like my own brother,” said Terry. “I’ve always been very supportive of him and the type of man that he is both on and off the court. And his character, the way he carries himself. So, nothing but the utmost respect for him. And I know he’s gonna be a guy that continues to do great things in life.”
While Terry has respect for Beard on and off the court; his team has continued to flourish since Texas made the decision to terminate his former boss. But that success has not been without its hiccups and Saturday proved to be a tough Big 12 outing again.
Despite their record, Oklahoma has proven time and time this season that they are an opponent that should not be taken lightly. And they proved it again on Saturday when they forced the Longhorns to beat them in overtime. Texas was able to pull out the victory 85-83 thanks to the play of guard Sir’Jabari Rice. Rice finished the game with 24 points on 8-13 shooting from the field and 4-6 shooting from beyond the arc from off the bench.
