It is officially draft week, with the 2022 NFL Draft set to get underway on Thursday night. In the days leading up to the draft, ESPN College GameDay’s Chris Fallica has been rattling off some intriguing draft stats. Among those draft stats from Fallica was one that might not be a welcome sight for fans of the Texas Longhorns.

Fallica notes that Texas has not had a first round pick in the NFL Draft since defensive tackle Malcom Brown was selected with the 32nd overall pick in 2015 by the New England Patriots. The other schools with just a single selection in the first round over the past six drafts is company that many would likely expect the Longhorns to be above.

“Schools which have a 1st round pick in the last 6 drafts – Alabama St, Duke, Temple, UCF, N. Dakota St, Memphis, San Diego St, Tulsa, Northwestern, Wyoming, Western Michigan, Utah St, Louisiana Tech, along with Texas schools Baylor, Houston, TCU, Texas A&M, Texas Tech and UTSA,” Fallica said.

Where Texas draft prospects sit entering draft weekend

Texas will not have a player selected in the first round of the 2022 NFL Draft on Thursday night. In fact, the Longhorns might not have a single player selected through the entirety of draft weekend.

According to the NFL.com draft database, Texas has two players in this year’s NFL Draft in kicker Cameron Dicker and cornerback Josh Thompson.

Dicker is listed with a draft projection between the sixth and seventh rounds, but as a kicker, his status as a selection is very much uncertain. This past season, Dicker made 13 of his 15 field goal attempts, converting 86.7%. He also made 49 of his 50 extra point attempts, and his longest field goal of the year was good from 50 yards out.

Texas was a five-year contributor for Texas. This past season, he totaled 34 tackles with two passes defended and one interception, which was returned for a touchdown. Thompson had two interceptions and seven passes defended in his five-year collegiate career.

On Tuesday, ESPN’s Matt Miller released a full seven-round NFL mock draft, which gave an intriguing glimpse into what draft weekend could look like. In the end, he did not have a single Texas player go in the draft.
