Nic Codie: Three Thoughts on Texas' Newest Commitment
Rodney Terry locked in and got his man as Nic Codie has committed to the Texas Longhorns. Codie is the second commitment for Texas in the 2024 recruiting cycle joining four-star small forward Cam Scott.
This 2024 class comes behind a two-man 2023 recruiting cycle where they landed four-star guard Chris Johnson and three-star wing Devon Pryor. Texas is still in play for Five-Star Plus+ shooting guard Tre Johnson in 2024.
Let’s discuss what getting Nic Codie means for Texas.
Who is Nic Codie?
Nic Codie is the No. 34 player in the 2024 On3 150 and the No. 7 power forward in the 2024 On3 Industry Ranking. Codie chose the Longhorns over schools like Auburn, Houston, Miami, and others.
Codie plays his high school ball at Carrollton (TX) Newman Smith High. He averaged 16 points and nine rebounds as a junior leading his team to a 22-8 record. He then played with the Southern Assault program on the Adidas 3SSB Circuit this summer, averaging 11.7 points and 6.1 rebounds.
“I’ve improved a lot on my skill level this summer,” Codie told On3. “I’ve always been a natural leader, but my three-point shooting has become a weapon, and I’m getting stronger with the ball. My defense is a strong part for me, I’m guarding the ball and using my length.”
What does he bring to Texas?
You immediately see the upside and the archetype that Nic Codie brings. Standing in the 6-foot-8, 6-foot-9 range, he is a fluid athlete, with great length. The defensive upside is naturally apparent. He can move his feet on the perimeter, get in the passing lanes in the halfcourt, and he has natural timing as a weakside shot blocker.
Codie’s offensive game is continuing to develop as well. He is a crafty player from fifteen feet and in. He has touch with a quick leap that allows him to get shots off at different angles. Codie started to show touch that extended beyond the three-point arc during the summer. Especially when his feet were set. With his consistent release and his balance points, there is an upside with the jump shot that could turn into a weapon in time.

The player archetype is certainly there. You see the length and the switchability on defense. You see the touch on offense. He is also someone who continues to get better, adding something different to his game each time you see him.
Codie’s father Nakia Codie played defensive back at Baylor and in the NFL.
Codie Talks Texas
“Getting Texas was a big deal. It’s the biggest college in Texas, so it was big for them to recruit me. They have a lot of history, they had a good year last year. They play fast and strong.
“I’m looking for a program that is going to develop me as a player,” Nic Codie says. “I also want to go to a place that has a real family atmosphere. When I move away for college, that is going to be my family, so I have to make sure I feel good with them.
“I want a coach that is going to develop me and let me know. I don’t want to play in a system that just focuses on one part of my game, I want to grow and develop my entire game. Early playing time is something that I’m looking at. I want to be at a place where I can compete for early minutes.”
