Texas A&M associate head coach Nolan Cain is set to join Jim Schlossnagle at Texas, D1Baseball’s Kendall Rogers reported. There was speculation he could be a candidate to replace Schlossnagle in College Station, but is instead heading to Austin with him.

Cain was a part of Schlossnagle’s initial staff at Texas A&M in 2022. Prior to that, he served as coordinator of baseball operations at his alma mater, LSU, from 2013-14 before moving up to assistant coach under Paul Mainieri from 2015-21.

Cain became known for his recruiting prowess during his time at Texas A&M. But with Schlossnagle officially heading to Texas, he’ll try to continue that SEC track record as the Longhorns join the league.

Schlossnagle took over at Texas A&M after a long tenure at TCU, where he took the Horned Frogs to five College World Series appearances. All told, during his time in College Station, Schlossangle has a 135-62 record. He also led the Aggies to two CWS appearances in his three years, making the program’s first trips to Omaha since 2017.

Now, he’s heading to Texas. Schlossnagle released a statement on his decision Tuesday night.

“I would like to thank General Welsh, Trev Alberts, and the 12th Man for an incredible experience during my time at Texas A&M,” Schlossnagle said. “Although I know many will be upset with my decision, I chose to make a change to join a longtime friend to continue my career as a college baseball coach. The run to the National Championship game was truly a remarkable one this year, and I will savor the memories and true friendships I have made there for a lifetime.”

New Texas A&M athletics director Trev Alberts also released a statement on Schlossnagle’s decision. He wished the coach well and said the Aggies plan on finding a “great leader” to be their next baseball head coach.

“After our baseball team arrived back in College Station earlier today, Jim informed me of his desire to leave Texas A&M,” Alberts said of Schlossnagle’s decision. “While we are certainly disappointed, we are grateful for his contributions in helping our baseball program reach unprecedented heights.  Baseball success is important to everyone associated with Texas A&M, we will not stop in our pursuit of excellence and our commitment to baseball will not waiver.

“On behalf of Texas A&M Athletics, we wish Jim and his family well as they move on to another challenge. We will find a great leader and excellent coach to head up this proud Aggie baseball program.”
