Texas quarterback Quinn Ewers criticizes own footwork amid recent struggles

Expectations were high for Quinn Ewers heading into the year. One of the top quarterback prospects ever being paired with Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian was viewed as a dream partnership.
But outside of one game against Oklahoma, it’s been anything but good from the Longhorns’ passing game. Saturday against TCU may have been the worst of them all. Something will need to change for Ewers to improve over the next two games and he may have identified it on Monday.

Ewers criticized his own footwork after being asked if there has been a lapse lately. “Lazy” was the way he described it, saying the footwork has to be better in order to see success on the field.
“I think so,” Ewers said via Joe Cook of Inside Texas. “I think the past couple of games I’ve gotten too lazy with my feet. It’s just plain and simple, I just need to get better at that whether it’s setting up in a certain gap or dropping straight back.”
Ewers will have more time this season to make the fixes he wants, with two regular season games remaining against Kansas and then Baylor. With Texas sitting at six wins, there will be bowl practice and a bowl game for the quarterback as well.

Developing signal callers and offensive scheme is why Sarkisian was brought to Austin from Tuscaloosa as the Alabama offensive coordinator. Strides have been made in other parts of the program but right now, the quarterback position is struggling.
Ewers is completing just 55.2% of his throws right now, mightily struggling to find guys open let alone get down the field. Against TCU, the redshirt freshman went 17 of 39 for just 171 yards, which was a season-low.
Deep balls have been an issue as well, especially with Xavier Worthy. Even with the two consistently trying to link up, and the ball ending up on the ground more often than not, Sarkisian has continued to call those types of plays.
Quinn Ewers has done a nice job of admitting something is wrong when it comes to his footwork. Now, it’s his job alongside Sarkisian to fix those issues in practice before putting them on display in the game.
