Quinn Ewers evaluates improvement of Texas' remodeled receiver room this spring
If Quinn Ewers was going to improve heading into his second year as the starter, some more talented weapons were needed on the roster. Specifically, at wide receiver. Xavier Worthy and Jordan Whittington were the only true contributors via the position and more options were needed.
Steve Sarkisian then addressed the position through both the NCAA transfer portal and the 2023 recruiting class. Immediately stepping on campus, Ewers got the opportunity to go through spring practice with the new guys and the moves are already paying off. The Texas starting quarterback is already aligned heading into summer workouts.
“We added a couple of good guys and couldn’t be more excited about the future of this team,” Ewers said. “I think all of these guys are really bought in on the timing routes and the deep balls and the angles. I’m really excited.”
Of the additions, Georgia transfer AD Mitchell is likely the biggest. He shined in the Orange and White game, catching six passes for 58 yards and an incredible touchdown. Mitchell was able to make a play on a pass nobody could have last season, hauling in the score with one hand.
Mitchell has the chance to become incredibly valuable as the season progresses. During his time in Athens, he always found a way to show up on the biggest stage. In four College Football Playoff games, Mitchell has caught a touchdown in all of them. Two were go-ahead scores as well.

Quinn Ewers connecting well with freshman wide receivers
Two freshmen have stepped in at Texas and will have a chance to make an impact. Johntay Cook and DeAndre Moore were early enrollees and instantly got to work with Ewers. Cook even has a preexisting relationship with the quarterback as both are from the Dallas-Fort Worth area.
Both Cook and Moore were on the Orange team during the spring game, not directly working with Ewers in the game-like scenario. Maalik Murphy was their main thrower, combining for eight catches 131 yards and Cook came down with a touchdown.
But Ewers likely got plenty of reps with them during the 15 spring practices.
All of this talent added by Sarkisian while Worthy and Whittington will still play major roles. Tight end Ja’Tavion Sanders will be up there in December as one of the team’s leading receivers. Ewers will now have plenty of guys to distribute to beginning in the fall.
