Former No. 1 overall prospect Quinn Ewers made one of the biggest move of the offseason when he transferred from Ohio State to Texas after one season. After reclassifying into 2021, he capitalized on new NIL legislation before returning home with a chance to compete for the starting job under Steve Sarkisian.

During his first media availability since the transfer, Quinn Ewers discussed his return to Texas and what spring practice has looked like in a new system.

“I’m just excited to be in the home state,” said Ewers, via Inside Texas’ Joe Cook. “You kind of put the past behind you and focus on what’s ahead. I’m super excited about what’s ahead.”

According to On3’s Transfer Portal Rankings, Ewers ranked as the No. 6 available player and the No. 3 quarterback. He arrives as a redshirt freshman after appearing in just one game without recording any stats for the Buckeyes.

After spending one season with Ryan Day, he now has one spring under Steve Sarkisian. The transition from one offensive genius to another has gone well so far according to the young quarterback.

“As of right now, I feel pretty comfortable with what’s been installed,” said Ewers. “I’m excited to keep learning, because I’ve obviously got a lot of learning to do. As of right now, I’m pretty comfortable.”

Steve Sarkisian on quarterback battle

Just like many college football teams across the country, Texas is currently having a competition to determine its starting quarterback for the 2022 season. While Steve Sarkisian brings back sophomore Hudson Card, the Longhorns also brought in Quinn Ewers to challenge for the spot.

As Card and Ewers continue to compete for the starting job, the way they perform in game-like situations is what’s going to stand out to Sarkisian. Meeting with the media on Tuesday, the head coach provided an update on his quarterback competition.

“I thought both guys Saturday played efficient football for us,” Sarkisian said. “I think both of them, when we ran the numbers, were over 70 percent completion percentage Saturday. We were able to hit some explosive plays. I thought both of them executed well in the red area and on third down – and they took care of the ball. Not a turnover from either guy.

“So, all those things were really positive. When we went back and looked at the tape, I think they see some other opportunities that maybe were there. But for our first scrimmage, I was very pleased with the way that they played.”
