With spring practice now behind him, Texas quarterback Quinn Ewers is looking forward to a chance to rest. He and his teammates will all go to their respective homes and spend some time away from each other, something that can provide them a chance to come back renewed.

Ewers doesn’t plan to spend all of his time off away from a football field, however. He also knows the importance of getting a little bit of extra work in, and that’s something he plans to do with the teammates who are close to where he lives in Dallas.

“I think it’s good to have a little break,” the QB said. “I think it’s good to kind of get to refresh and see the family a little bit. But after about a week or two, you’re already getting the itch and you’re ready to be back. As some of the guys that are leaders on this team, the people the do live around each other and in the same area, we definitely encourage them to meet up.

“I know I’m gonna have some throwing sessions down in Dallas and Johntay (Cook)’s not too far. There’s other guys that are close too. Staying together through the month of May is huge.”

It sounds like the team is eager for the chance to meet up with each other whenever it is possible to do so this offseason. It’s good to see Quinn Ewers setting the tone as a leader and encouraging his Texas teammates to do so.

The Longhorns are coming off of 12-2 finish this past season that saw it advance to its first College Football Playoff in program history. That gives them a ton of momentum as they prepare for their first season as a member of the SEC.

Ewers was a big part of that success as he threw for 3,479 yards, 22 touchdowns and six interceptions. He is prepared to enter his third season as the starting quarterback and that experience should be valuable as he faces even tougher opponents with the conference change.

The Longhorns added a number of transfer receivers this offseason to stock up weapons for Ewers, including former Alabama wideout Isaiah Bond. That has expectations high and Ewers and the rest of the returners will hope their offseason work pays off to take another step heading into 2024.

Texas will kick off this season on Aug. 31 against Colorado State before facing defending national champion Michigan.
