Quinn Ewers explains how Texas' deep passing game has developed throughout offseason
One place where Texas is looking to improve this year is its ability to push the ball downfield in the passing game. To do that, the Longhorns are going to need quarterback Quinn Ewers and the team’s wide receivers to take a massive step forward.
Following the spring game, Ewers broke down Texas’ deep passing game, praising its development this offseason.
“Yeah, I think we really took time and worked on the deep balls and got the timing down and the depth and the angles of all the routes,” Quinn Ewers said. “Again, I’m really excited with where we’re at right now.”
Quinn Ewers even pointed out that he and Xavier Worthy are working on their connection. That showed up in one key play during the spring game where the pair hooked up on a downfield shot.
“You know, Xavier had a great catch on the sideline early in the scrimmage and we’re just gonna build up from here on out and I’m excited.”
It wasn’t just Quinn Ewers and Xavier Worthy who were succeeding going downfield. There have been several players improving in this area for Texas, as Ewers pointed out.
“Yeah, Maalik [Murphy] threw a great ball to Johntay [Cook] and obviously we’re excited about Johntay’s speed on the outside.”

Quinn Ewers flashed his potential in 10 games for the Longhorns last season, throwing for 2,177 yards and 15 touchdowns. He’s already being mocked as a potential top-10 pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, especially if he can have a strong 2023 season.
Quinn Ewers evaluated the other quarterbacks
Following the spring game, Quinn Ewers broke down the play of his fellow quarterbacks, Arch Manning and Maalik Murphy.
“I think it was a good day. Really excited to where this team’s at. Excited to build in the fall, and throughout the summer. I think both those guys did really well. Obviously Arch, he just got here and he’s learned the offense great. He’s coming along great,” Ewers said.
Arch Manning, the nephew of Peyton and Eli Manning, had one of the most followed recruitments. A five-star recruit, he was the top ranked recruit in the Class of 2023, according to the On3 Industry Rankings. However, Maalik Murphy is no pushover, coming to Texas as a four-star recruit in the 2022 cycle.
“I’m really fired up about our quarterback room. I think we all get along real well, and I’m excited for the future.”
