Quinn Ewers is making his return for Texas and on the biggest stage, facing Oklahoma in the Red River Shootout. The quarterback was recovering from an abdominal injury suffered against UTSA, missing two games and resting up during the bye week. While head coach Steve Sarkisian admitted Ewers could have played against Mississippi State, the recovery process was more important in his eyes.

ESPN’s Holly Rowe gave more detail on how Ewers got back for the game just ahead of kickoff. She revealed Ewers got help from the quarterback trainer of Patrick Mahomes, going through different exercises to heal what was a non-contact injury.

“You know Quinn Ewers’ rib injury,” Rowe said. “That rib strain and oblique strain, they have been doing all kinds of things. They reached out to Patrick Mahomes quarterback trainer, Bobby Stroupe. He’s been doing breathing exercises underwater to contract those ribs, using an ultrasound machine for hours. Watching in warmups, he was not grimacing or in pain but we’ll see how that changes with a hit today in this game.”

Unfortunately for Texas, the first drive did not go to plan. Ewers overshot a wide-open receiver on third down and Oklahoma safety Billy Bowman was there for an interception. Not the throw you would expect from somebody of Ewers’ caliber but it’s another turnover at the Cotton Bowl for the third-year starter.

Tim Tebow debates if Quinn Ewers is on short leash due to Arch Manning

ESPN analyst Tim Tebow was asked on SportsCenter Saturday morning what Steve Sarkisian should do if Ewers struggles in this year’s Red River Rivalry, particularly with a quarterback like Arch Manning waiting on the bench.

According to Tebow, Quinn Ewers is the guy for the Longhorns, no matter what happens on Saturday.

“Well listen, I think Arch has done an amazing job. I think he is a top 25, top 30 quarterback in college football, even in only a little bit of time, only starting a couple of games.” Tebow said. “He is doing a great job. But I also think it’s so important that you have to be clear – Quinn Ewers is one of the best quarterbacks in the country. You can make an argument that he is the best quarterback in the country. What he did at the Big House against Michigan, he led his team to the playoff last year. I think that no matter what happens today, he has to be your guy.”
