Quinn Ewers injury: Texas QB to undergo MRI following win vs. Kentucky
Texas quarterback Quinn Ewers will undergo a precautionary MRI after suffering an ankle injury in the Longhorns’ win over Kentucky on Saturday, per Orangebloods.com’s Anwar Richardson. Richardson further stated that those close to the situation are “cautiously optimistic Ewers does not have any structural damage and will only need ankle treatments this week.”
The injury occurred in the first half and Ewers briefly entered the injury tent but ultimately finished the game. Following the win, Ewers provided an update on his injury.
“It’s just a little tender. Just gonna do as much treatment as I can,” Ewers said. “It was around the 50-yard line and I stepped up and kind of took off running a little bit and then kind of got hip-drop tackled. And I think he kind of just rolled up on it a little, but it’s football and stuff like that happens.”
Ewers didn’t allow the pain to prevent him from having a solid showing. The junior QB completed 20-of-his-31 pass attempts against Kentucky for 191 yards and two touchdowns without throwing an interception. Ewers only suffered one sack in the contest.
Then again, Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian didn’t give Kentucky’s defense many opportunities to attack his QB1. After Ewers’ injury, Texas resorted to a heavy rushing attack. In the second half alone, the Longhorns recorded 27 carries for 132 yards.

After the game, Sarkisian discussed his decision to rely on the ground game in the second half.
“On kind of a scramble up the middle, [Ewers] got – I guess you can call it a hip-drop tackle, as they refer to it in the NFL,” Sarkisian said. “It’s not illegal in college football. And it just kept kind of tightening up on him. And at that point, I said that I didn’t feel like it was worth having to expose him.”
This isn’t the first time Ewers has dealt with injuries this season. In Texas’ win over UTSA on Sept. 14, Ewers left the game in the second quarter after suffering an oblique injury. The injury kept Ewers sidelined for nearly a month before he returned on Oct. 12 to play in the Red River Rivalry.
Now, Texas fans can only hope Quinn Ewers’ injury doesn’t have long-term effects. The Longhorns have a massive matchup coming up against Texas A&M this weekend. The Longhorns and Aggies will square off at 7:30 p.m. ET on Saturday. The game will air live on ABC.
