Quinn Ewers was thought to be completely healthy heading into Saturday’s College Football Playoff game against Clemson. The ankle brace Ewers wore against Georgia in the SEC Championship was not expected to be on. And during warmups, the quarterback had nothing on his right ankle.

But as Texas scored its second touchdown of the day, ESPN’s Laura Rutledge pointed out Ewers was wearing a brace. Cameras zoomed in on the ankle and while white socks and tape were covering it, you could tell the brace was on.

“We were told that Quinn Ewers would not be wearing his Tayco Athletic X brace on the right ankle. But if you look closely, he is wearing it. He was not wearing it in warmups but then had it on when he came out to play. I would imagine something happened in warmups. He’s obviously feeling well enough to be out there.”

Rutledge had provided an update on Ewers just ahead of kickoff, saying there were no issues with Ewers. Head coach Steve Sarkisian was looking forward to letting the quarterback “loose” in the game, hoping to bring back the effective passing game.

“Quinn Ewers, the quarterback, feeling much better,” Rutledge said in pregame. “Not wearing the ankle brace on the outside of his ankle. They’re ready to let him loose today.”

The ankle is not the only thing Ewers has dealt with throughout the season. An oblique injury forced him to miss multiple games, giving Arch Manning a path to start. Ewers returned as the starter ahead of the Oklahoma game and ever since, it’s been a battle for him.

Sarkisian praised the toughness of his quarterback ahead of the Clemson game. He understands how much Ewers means to the Longhorns as the journey to a national championship officially begins on Saturday.

“I think there’s something to be said when your starting quarterback shows that toughness and that resiliency and that fighting through when it’s not always easy. … And what that means to his team. So I think it means a ton to our players knowing what Quinn’s been fighting through. He’s healthier today than he’s been in probably over a month.”
