Texas Longhorns head coach Steve Sarkisian has announced that Quinn Ewers will be the team’s starter against Oklahoma.

This comes after Ewers was forced to miss the past two games with an injury. He suffered that injury against UTSA in a non-contact play. That injury was later described as an oblique strain.

In place of Quinn Ewers, Texas has been starting Arch Manning at quarterback. A well-regarded player in his own right, he was able to hold things down in Ewers’ absence. Now, Manning is set to return to that backup role in Red River.

Manning had starts against ULM and Mississippi State, flashing some of his talent in those games. However, Ewers with his experience and talent is the blend that Texas is hopeful will be able to help the program get to the places it wants to go this season.

Amid the highly-anticipated Manning playing, Ewers was still helpful in acting as a mentor, which is something Sarkisian took notice of and made sure to praise.

“And so, you know, that’s a credit to his work ethic. It’s a credit to the staff of working with him. And so, proud of him for he’s able to accomplish. And we’re in a very fortunate situation to have a starter like Quinn, but to have a capable backup in Arch is huge for us for the long-term perspective,” Sarkisian said.

Prior to the announcement that Ewers was going to start against Oklahoma, he was listed as probable on the team’s Wednesday injury report. This is coming off a bye week for Texas. So, it was trending in the direction that he’d be healthy enough to play for some time now and there was always the presumption that he wouldn’t lose his job due to the injury.

Now, it will be interesting to see if Ewers still makes an appearance on Texas’ Thursday injury report.

Quinn Ewers came to Texas as a transfer ahead of the 2022 season. In all three years, he’s been in Austin, Ewers has been the starter and has consistently gotten better on the field. However, injuries have also followed him, with Ewers missing time in all three seasons he’s played.

In 2024, Ewers has played in three games and is completing 73.4 percent of his passes for 691 yards and eight touchdowns.

For Texas, Red River against Oklahoma is always an important game. However, after losing to Oklahoma last season, the Longhorns are looking for revenge. On top of that, sitting at the top of the rankings, the Longhorns want to make a statement about their place in the sport.
